  • Beginning a Vegetable Garden, with Mac Mead This workshop is for anyone who wants to start a vegetable garden, incorporating basic skills for new gardeners. Pfeiffer Center Director Mac Mead will cover such topics as: planning the garden (what goes where and when), preparing the soil, fencing the garden, planting and raising seedlings, companion planting, and weeding and mulching. Participants will walk away with the information and hands-on experience they need to get started this spring in their own garden.   • Farm Life Ecology: A Field and Table Intensive at Green Mountain College  ~  This 13-week, 12-credit summer farm intensive immerses student in the theory, sweat, and rhythms of managing a small-scale, highly-diverse farm. Students live on the farm and will have the opportunity to learn about organic vegetable production, animal husbandry, and draft power. Classroom sessions are closely integrated with fieldwork to give students the why and how of sustainable farming. To provide a broader perspective, regular field trips are taken to many of the innovative and dynamic farms found in Vermont. Students will be able to learn what the future of organic farming systems could look and feel like and how they can be part of a growing movement to bring back the small family farm. Here, students experience sustainable agriculture and sustainable community. Best of all, students live off the farm by consuming farm-fresh milk, vegetables and eggs! May 24 - August 20

  • The Role of the Horse in the Farm Organism In this one-day workshop, farmer Mac Mead will present a comprehensive picture of the role of the horse in the farm organism. After reviewing the basic nature and care of the draft horse and its harness and equipment, we will move from the classroom to the barn, where attendees will get hands-on instruction and practice in the tasks of grooming and harnessing. In the field, attendees will try their hands at several practical tasks, such as logging, plowing, discing, and working raised beds.   • Apitherapy: Health and Healing with Products from the Hive The honeybee and hive products have historically played a significant role in disease care and prevention. Today, science is finally catching up to what herbalists, acupuncturists, and beekeepers have known for years. Covered will be the healing properties of honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly, beeswax and honeybee venom. Presented by the Pfeiffer Center, Chestnut Ridge, NY  ~  June 20, 2010

  • Continuing the Vegetable Garden Learn and practice basic skills for the mid-season garden, including weeding, mulching, watering, succession planting, harvesting, pest control, and cover cropping. This workshop is a follow-up to Beginning a Vegetable Garden (March 27), though attendance is not a prerequisite for this workshop. All gardeners, especially beginners, are welcome to participate.
