Building Healthy Soils with Pastured Livestock & Organic Livestock Processing in the North Country
Event Details
Join Renee and Roy Smith at Sugar Hill Farm for a tour of their farm and a discussion of how to promote soil health by using pastured livestock. Renee and Roy will cover bale grazing, targeted foliar feeding, bringing in nutrients like chicken compost from off-farm, and a variety of other methods that they have used to build their soils over the past 8 years. Following the soil-building portion of the afternoon, we’ll turn our attention to several exciting efforts that the Smiths (along with 3 other people) are spearheading to bring organic livestock processing facilities to the North Country.
Roy and Renee Smith raise 100% Grass-fed beef, pastured pork, and free-range chicken at Sugar Hill Farm. They market their products through a year-round meat CSA. Roy and Renee are also leading an effort through North Country Pastured to bring a mobile processing unit and a new slaughterhouse to the region’s organic producers. The unit will be Certified Organic, Certified Humanely Treated, and Animal Welfare Approved.
