Organic Grain Marketing Webinar: Varieties for Growing Organic Food Grade
Event Details
Successful grain growing is all about varieties. Dr. Elizabeth Dyck, coordinator of the Organic Growers Research and Information Sharing Network (OGRIN), has conducted participatory research with organic and low-input farmers and gardeners in Kenya, Minnesota, New York, and Pennsylvania. She is currently working with farmers, bakers, and grain processors to re-establish wheat and other food grains on Northeast farms.
Dr. Dyck will share the results of trials for hard and soft wheat, rye, emmer, spelt, einkorn using organic management practices that she and others have conducted in New York and New England, Minnesota, North Dakota and elsewhere. She will also discuss the pros and cons of fall and spring planting, sourcing seed and cooperative ordering.
Of particular interest for the growing microbrewery marketplace will be resources from Oregon research on two and six-row barley varieties.
The webinar will be hosted by NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets staff person, Sarah Johnston, and Farm to Bakery project consultant Glenda Neff. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions during the session.
