Season Extension & Food Safety: Year Round Production at Pleasant Valley Farm
Sandy and Paul Arnold have completed their third 34'X144' unheated high tunnel with automatic venting. The Arnolds will discuss their high tunnel winter crop rotation and production schedules, along with their multiple storage facilities, including a 24 ton capacity root cellar, which allows them to market year-round at local farmers' markets. The field day will also focus on the Arnold's newly renovated washing and packing facilities in anticipation of the GAP food safety guidelines. Participants will be given the the opportunity to see their radiant-heated greenhouse and tour their fields and see their outside production, including the mulching and cultivation techniques. The Arnolds now have a 30kW net-metered solar system which provides all of their electricity, and they also have installed an evacuated tube solar domestic hot water system. Bring a dish to pass and stay after the tour for networking and a social hour pot-luck.
