Transitioning to GAPs Compliance on a Diverse Organic Farm
Event Details
What does it take for a diversified organic farm to become GAPs certified? Join Andy Fellenz and NOFA-NY for a look at how Good Agricultural Practices are being implemented at Fellenz Family Farm. Andy will discuss why he has decided to pursue GAPs certification, the process of transitioning to GAPs compliance, his farm food safety plan, and some of the flexibility that exists within the GAPs certification. Several members of the farm crew will also join us to discuss how the farm’s food safety plan relates to their harvest and handling procedures. Andy will lead a tour of the farm and packing shed, and refreshments will be served. If you’re concerned about food safety on your farm or considering becoming GAPs certified, you won’t want to miss this chance to get a producer perspective on food safety issues and regulations.
Andy, Jan and Erik Fellenz operate a 220 member CSA in Phelps, NY. They grow a diverse array of vegetables and fruits, including u-pick strawberries and blackberries. Andy serves on NOFA-NY’s Policy Committee, and the farm has been certified organic since 2005.
