A Value-Added Grains “Trifecta”
Event Details
This is an event for farmers (including veg growers who want to diversify), aspiring small-scale grain growers, bakers, millers, and other grain processors—and eaters! First, tour organic variety/landrace trials of wheat and emmer and get expert advice on production from the Cornell wheat breeding team. You’ll also see the “switch-hitter” heirloom wheat Red Fife, which in our region looks like it can be planted in spring or fall. Second, participate in a tasting of breads made with different varieties of hard red wheat (including Red Fife) prepared by Wide Awake Bakery, a new CSA bakery in Mecklenburg, NY, that uses locally grown grains.
You’ll also taste products made with other regionally grown, value-added grains, including soft wheat, emmer, spelt, einkorn, and buckwheat. Third, check out an array of affordable equipment for small- and intermediate-scale grain production (including harvesting and grain-cleaning equipment). Finally, give us feedback on how we can work together to build a sustainable regional grain food system.
The event is free, but pre-registration is appreciated to help plan the tasting. To pre-register and for more information, contact Elizabeth Dyck (edyck@ogrin.org, 607-895-6913, www.ogrin.org), at the Organic Growers’ Research and Information-Sharing Network, visit the NOFA-NY Shopping page or give Katie a call at 585-271-1979 ext 512 .
