The Rules

All foods consumed during the challenge, must be produced locally and sustainably.

What is Local?

For the purpose of this challenge-within 250 miles.  However, we encourage challengers to strive for a 100 mile radius.  Participants are encouraged to set a goal that works for them, and to document their challenge experience via journal, blog, photos or video.

Note:

*In New York City, the Greenmarket Farmers Markets are an ideal place to procure local and organic products for this challenge.  Due to the nature of New York City’s location and urban setting, the Greenmarket set its radius for items sold to 120 miles to the south, 170 miles east and west and 250 miles north of New York City.

What is Sustainable?

The quick short answer-Certified Organic farms and products and farms that have signed the Farmer's Pledge.

The quick long answer-food that is produced without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, synthetic hormones and antibiotics.  Sustainable food is grown naturally, with crops grown using systems like crop rotations and cover cropping and animals raised humanely and healthfully.

We also strongly encourage challengers to speak with the Farmer’s Market managers as well as with the producers directly to understand their personal growing practices as well as to confirm that the items are local.  Each market sets their own policies, and these vary from market to market.
