Please join us for our Annual Cover Crop Tour and Workshop at USDA-NRCS Big Flats Plant Materials Center on 11/4/11 from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. Last year was a HUGE success, with over a 100 attendees, and we except another great turnout.  Attached is the announcement with a more detailed explanation of the day’s events!!  (Please forward on to any people you feel would be interested as well).

Tour of cover crop plots with Paul Salon, Plant Materials Specialist at Big Flats PMC- over 40 species seeded at several seeding dates, two diverse mixes with over 15 species seeded in June and August as well as a demonstration of a roller crimper. Speakers include:

 Tom Kilcer, former extension specialist and consultant - The economics of using short rotations and cover crops for harvest. 
 Ray Archuletta , National Technology Center-East- Soil quality, biology and cover crops. Rainfall simulation demonstration. 
 Quirine Ketterings , Cornell University, Animal Science Dept and Nutrient Management spear program-  Fall accumulation of nitrogen and carbon for cover crops seeded in August following small grain and in September following corn silage; and the spring nitrogen and carbon pools. 
 David Brandt , Ohio farmer- Experience with no-tilling since 1971 and cover cropping since 1978 on 900 acres. 
 Ray Styer , North Carolina Farmer-30 year experience cover cropping and no-till, no chemical fertilizer inputs in 16 years and  75% reduction in herbicide use. 
 Tom Bjorkman , Cornell University, Horticulture Department- Review of Brassica crops for cover cropping.
