Understanding Your Soil
Event Details
Healthy soils are the foundation for sustainable farms. Conrad Vispo of the Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program will moderate a program including the planned participation of Cornell University soil health specialist, Bob Schindelbeck; farmers Jean Paul Courtens of Roxbury Farm and Hugh Williams of Threshold Farm; and Cornell graduate student Emily Reiss.
Join us as we explore and deepen our awareness of the different soil types that form our farmscapes and influence our farm planning. The morning will be a general introduction to our soils and how to look at their production capabilities and ecology; weather permitting, much of this will be done in the field. The afternoon will explore some particular perspectives on soils and their management through examples including the tailoring of farming for the particular soil types on a farm, key-line farming as a means of soil and water management, and nutrient flow modeling to better understand field specific soil nutrition.
Sliding Scale Fee: $100-50 including lunch
Registration:Pre-registration and pre-payment are required to secure a spot for this workshop
