Dear Friend of Organic Farming,
It is at this time of the year, that we step back to reflect on the year passing, look longingly to the year ahead, feel thankful for what we have, and hope that the coming year will be more fruitful. There is no doubt, that 2011 has been a difficult year for all growers—a wet spring, a summer drought, and disastrous flooding across much of the state in September has left many growers in dire need of assistance. We hope that as the season ends, and that repairs and changes are underway, that there is still a feeling of hope and promise for the year ahead. If your farm is still in need of assistance, we ask that you contact our office and let us know what support you may need.
Looking back on 2011, I am most struck by how hard our farmers work to produce the high-quality organic food we eat. Our growers face challenges every day, and not just with weeds, pests and difficult weather, but also with marketing, financing and regulation. The continued need for education and technical assistance for organic farmers is evident. I am very proud of the programming that NOFA-NY provides each year. Our programs continue to be of the highest quality and serve more people than ever. In addition, the demand for locally produced organic food is still growing, and there is increasing interest in organic farming and a burgeoning (and enthusiastic!) beginning farming community. As this interest and need grows, NOFA-NY is working steadily to expand its reach. Our membership has experienced a 33% growth so far this year, and we are striving for another 40% growth in 2012! This is the largest surge in membership NOFA-NY has had in many years. We are thankful and hopeful. This new group of members includes a diverse mix of seasoned farmers, beginning farmers, gardeners, food professionals, businesses and organizations, and interested consumers.
The need to serve this increasingly diverse group of stakeholders in the organic food system is evident, and during the past two years, NOFA-NY has met these needs head on by expanding its programming. In 2011 we launched exciting new programs like our beginning farmer program, the 1st annual dairy and field crop conference, an expanded NY Locavore Challenge, a new technical assistance hotline for farmers and the 1st edition Organic Farm Resource Directory. These new programs complement our continued annual programming including the winter conference, Organic Food Guide, field days, and policy work.
NOFA-NY’s programming plays a crucial role in serving the organic community in New York state, but to meet the expanding needs of the growing market we need your help! Our membership dues and program fees only cover a portion of the funds needed for NOFA-NY to operate. Fundraising in the form of individual contributions, fundraising events and grants allows NOFA-NY to provide these programs and services at an affordable rate for our farmer members. In 2011, this financial need is $90,000. To date, we have raised $40,000. Please consider making a gift today to show your support for organic agriculture in New York state. If every member and friend makes even just a small contribution, the impact will be astounding. Even a donation of $5 makes a true difference. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Kate Mendenhall
Executive Director
