Information for Potential Host Farms/Farmers

Click here to register, announce your apprenticeship opportunity and create a host farm profile.

Introduction
The NOFA-NY Apprenticeship Program begins with the connection between aspiring farmers and New York farms with apprenticeship opportunities. The NOFA-NY apprentice/host farm directory is not an automated matching service, but a tool to help experienced farmers and apprenticeship-seekers find each other. For more on this process, see “How It Works” below.

How it works (for interested host farmers; interested apprentices click here):

  1. To advertise an opening on your farm, complete an online application to register as a host farm. If you would prefer, the process can be completed over the phone or through a mailed form by contacting Rachel at (585) 271-1979 ext. 511.   The listing is free and open to NOFA-NY members.  (To join as a member of NOFA-NY, please click here).

  2. NOFA-New York will review your application, which must include a concrete strategy for apprentices’ skills-building education.  Your application becomes your profile when it is added to the directory.

  3. Approved profiles will be added to the directory and you will be notified of your login information and provided with more information about using the directory.

  4. Your login will allow you to browse potential apprentices’ profiles as well as to view how other farms have listed themselves. It is up to you, the host farm and potential apprentices, to contact each other to set up interviews for your farm apprenticeship.

  5. When you have filled your available apprenticeship positions, please set your profile to inactive and let NOFA-NY know the details of the arrangement.

Benefits of a Listing on NOFA-NY’s Host Farm/Apprentice Directory:

  • The directory is visible only to those who have applied and have been approved for a listing. Your information is only seen by individuals who are committed to finding an apprenticeship and other farms seeking apprentices.

  • Host farms and apprentices share the responsibility of seeking the right situation for their needs. Either one can contact the other based on the profile listed through the NOFA-NY directory.

  • Host farms become part of a host farmer network, through which ideas and information can be exchanged. NOFA-NY provides host farms with information and guidance about successful apprenticeships.

  • NOFA-NY notifies you and your apprentices about educational enrichment, especially the NOFA-NY Beginning Farmer Workshop series, which is a great component to an education plan.

  • Your apprenticeship is part of the professional development of a beginning farmer; NOFA-NY intends to maintain a connection with this beginning farmer after they complete their apprenticeship.  This follow-up ensures a higher probability that the farmers you train will persist through their farm start-up years.
