Urban Gardening

Urban agriculture is the practice of cultivating, processing and distributing food in, or around (peri-urban), a village, town or city. Urban agriculture in addition can also involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agro-forestry and horticulture. These activities also occur in peri-urban areas as well. Urban agriculture contributes to food security and food safety in two ways: first, it increases the amount of food available to people living in cities, and, second, it allows fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat products to be made available to urban consumers. (Homesteading, Wikepedia)

There are many different forms and techniques for urban gardening; it all depends on what is going to work for your situation. The space you have available may vary from a windowsill to an abandoned lot. Whatever you can achieve is a step in the right direction. Some urban gardeners can sow right into the ground while others have to bring in soil from an outside source and use containers to plant in. Container gardeners use anything that will hold some dirt, from an old kid’s swimming pool, to an old boot.
