Interstate Policy Work

On a regional level NOFA-NY is part of the NOFA Interstate Council. 

The NOFA Interstate Council takes public policy positions when all seven state chapters are in agreement.  As the foundation for its policies, the IC has adopted the Principles Organic Agriculture of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM).  This set of broad principles allows the IC to take positions on important issues such as the integrity of the National Organic Program. 

When an issue arises, if the IFOAM Principles do not address it and there is no previous IC position on it, the Policy Coordinator consults with the designated policy representatives of the seven state chapters.  Based on this consultation, the Coordinator decides to declare a position on behalf of all chapters, to list only the chapters that agree on an issue, or to request that further information and research be provided to the chapters so that a joint position can be reached.
