Beginning Farmer Progress Tracking: The NOFA-NY Core Competencies Tracking Tool
The NOFA-NY Beginning Farmer Program aims to support the skills, knowledge and confidence development that occurs as beginning farmers train via farm apprenticeships, farm labor, educational events, coursework and self-education. The NOFA-NY Core Competencies Tracking Tool is one aspect of this support system.
The Core Competencies Tracking Tool helps aspiring and new farmers target significant knowledge, experience or confidence gaps and create a strategy to address those gaps. It can be modified as suits the new farmer and their trainer (or independently-working new farmers). NOFA-NY sees this tool as a way for farmers to reflect upon their current learn-to-farm activities and to effectively seek out their next learning opportunities and steps to starting or improving their farms.
While designed for use between a mentor farmer and new farmer, the tool is free and available for any use. For instance, a mentor might incorporate the tool's activities into their farm's educational plan; a new farmer may work through the activities and introduce the tool to their employer, mentor or host farmer when appropriate.
