Speakers

ray archuleta  Ray Archuleta

Ray Archuleta is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist with the Soil Science Society of America and has over 30 years’ experience as a Soil Conservationist, Water Quality Specialist, and Conservation Agronomist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Ray received his AS degree in Livestock Science from Northern New Mexico College and a BS degree in Agricultural Biology plus 30 hours of graduate work in soil related courses from New Mexico State University. After his retirement from the NRCS in 2017, Ray founded Soil Health Consultants, LLC, and Soil Health Academy, to teach Biomimicry strategies and Agroecology principles for improving soil function on a national scale. Ray owns and operates a 150-acre farm near Seymour, Missouri that he operates along with his wife and family.

gabe brown  Gabe Brown

Gabe Brown is one of the pioneers of the current soil health movement which focuses on the regeneration of our resources. Gabe, his wife Shelly, and their son Paul own and operate a diversified 5,000 acre farm and ranch near Bismarck, ND. The Browns holistically integrate their grazing and no-till cropping systems, which include a wide variety of cash crops, multi-species cover crops along with all natural grass finished beef and lamb. They also raise pastured laying hens, broilers and swine. This diversity and integration has regenerated the natural resources on the ranch without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides. Over 2,000 people visit the Brown's Ranch annually to see this unique operation. They have had visitors from all 50 states and 17 foreign countries. Gabe is one of the partners at Soil Health Consultants, LLC, and a founder of Soil Health Academy. He is the author of Dirt to Soil: One Family’s Journey into Regenerative Agriculture.

Francis Thicke headshot  Francis Thicke

Francis Thicke, with his wife Susan, is the owner and operator of an organic dairy and crop farm near Fairfield, Iowa. They process their milk on the farm and market organic dairy products through local grocery stores and restaurants. They are also experimenting with innovative regenerative grazing and cropping practices on their farm. Francis has a Ph.D. in agronomy/soil fertility and has in the past served as the National Program Leader for Soil Science for the USDA-Extension Service.

NOFA-NY’s annual Winter Conference will take place January 18-20, 2019, at the Saratoga Hilton & City Center in Saratoga Springs, NY. One of the largest conferences in the region, the NOFA-NY 2019 Winter Conference will feature over 100 educational workshops across 13 tracks. The theme of this year's conference is “Climate of Change.”

The Winter Conference Keynote Speaker will be Leah Penniman, Co-Director & Program Manager of Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, New York. Leah is the author of the forthcoming book,  Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm’s Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land .

Concurrent with our Winter Conference, NOFA-NY is honored to host the Second Biennial Northeast Organic Seed Conference. The Seed Conference will offer an in-depth look at plant breeding and seed saving practices throughout the Northeast.
