Position Title
Vegetable Production Apprenticeship
Position Description
Hawthorne Valley Farm is a diversified 900 acre Organic and Demeter certified Biodynamic Farm. The farm is comprised of a 15 acre vegetable enterprise supplying a CSA, farmer’s markets and our farm store; and a diversified livestock operation consisting of a dairy herd, beef cows, pigs and meat chickens.

All Hawthorne Valley Farm apprentices experience farming through hands-on learning, balancing the demands of being a production farm with our goal of equipping our apprentices with the skills that they will need to succeed in starting or managing their own farm enterprises in the future. In addition, we have built into our apprenticeship program a number of supplemental experiences that explore the more theoretical and observational aspects of farming that are equally important to a farmer’s development.

The focused vegetable apprentice assists with all aspects of vegetable production, from greenhouse seeding, managing soil health, transplanting, irrigation, harvest, post-harvest handling and distribution. All apprentices will learn about tractor operation and use machinery to assist with various farm tasks.

Compensation

On-site housing and a monthly stipend are provided for all apprentices. Each apprentice has his/her own bedroom in a shared space on the farm with a communal kitchen, baths, and living space. Surplus Hawthorne Valley vegetables, milk, yogurt, cheeses, sauerkraut, bread, and meat are available for the apprentices.
