Qualifications: The Farmer will run Hope Farm and is in charge of a full spectrum of farm responsibilities. Hope Farm is an organic farm that was created in collaboration between New Hope Community and SUNY Sullivan. It is cultivated on a three-acre plot on the college campus. It offers educational, therapeutic and recreation benefits to people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (I/DD). An ideal candidate is a self-motivated and passionate professional who understands community engagement, participation and works toward a common goal of growing organic food, advancing knowledge and fostering full community membership for individuals with I/DD.
High School Diploma/GED. Valid NYS Driver's License for 1 year. Minimum of 3 years’ experience working on a producing farm is preferred. Experience with the following is preferred: Community-supported agriculture (CSA) Permaculture design Organic farming.

Reports to: Director of Innovative Programming and Growth

Essential Functions:
1. Determine types and quantities of crops or livestock to be raised, according to factors such as market conditions, federal program availability, and soil conditions.
2. Harvest crops at New Hope Farm and Greenhouse.
3. Install and shift irrigation systems to irrigate fields evenly or according to crop need.
4. Monitor crops as they grow in order to ensure that they are growing properly and are free from diseases and contaminants.
5. Perform crop production duties such as planning, tilling, planting, fertilizing, cultivating, spraying, and harvesting.
6. Plan crop activities based on factors such as crop maturity and weather conditions.
7. Select and purchase supplies and equipment such as seed, fertilizers, and farm machinery.
8. Set up and operate farm machinery to cultivate, harvest, and haul crops.
9. Assemble, position, and secure structures such as trellises, sheds, or fences.
10. Demonstrate and explain farm work techniques and safety regulations to workers/volunteers.
11. Grow out-of-season or early crops in greenhouses or cold-frame beds, or bud and graft plant stock.
12. Hire, train and direct workers/volunteers engaged in planting, cultivating, irrigating, harvesting, and marketing crops, and in raising livestock.
13. Lubricate, adjust, and make minor repairs to farm equipment.
14. Maintain facilities such as fencing, water supplies, and outdoor housing and wind shelters.
15. Facilitate community integration activities/events in conjunction with the farmer assistant to continue existing activities (tours etc) and expand opportunities into new ventures (Bee Keeping, Farmer’s Markets, Workshops, etc.)
16. Guide and support Farmer/ Horticulture Assistant to perform job expectations at NHC farm and greenhouse.
17. Collaborate with external entities such as Sullivan Community College and Sullivan Renaissance on areas of mutual interests.
18. Day Habilitation Services, Supported Work, Residential and other NHC departments to expand and develop farming/horticulture skills in individuals.

Additional Functions:
1. Participate in staff in-service training programs and meetings as requested by the Director.
2. Responsible for all other related work as requested by the Director.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
•Frequent pushing, pulling, squatting, walking and bending.
•Frequent lifting up to 50 lbs independently.
•Frequent exposure to chemicals.
•Occasional exposure to high noise levels.
•Exposure to all types of weather.
•Potential for exposure to blood and body fluids.
