Groundwork Hudson Valley is a 501c3 non-profit organization committed to “changing places and changing lives” in the lower Hudson Valley. Our mission is to create sustainable environmental change in urban neighborhoods through community-based partnerships that promote equity, youth leadership, and economic opportunity. Program areas include revitalizing public places, sustainability education, and youth leadership development. Groundwork partners with neighborhood residents, private and non-profit partners, local businesses and government officials to identify environmental improvements that will advance equitable, healthy, vibrant communities and empower the next generation of community leaders.

Education Associate Description
Groundwork is seeking an experienced and dynamic educator to fill our Sustainability Education Associate position. Our sustainability education department makes use of three experiential learning sites – the world-famous Science Barge floating farm, EcoHouse Urban Homestead, and the Daylighted Saw Mill River parks – as well as in-school programs. The primary role of the Education Associate is to provide energetic and engaging tours and STEM programs for K-12 school groups on the Science Barge and at EcoHouse, and within Yonkers public schools.
Additionally, the Education Associate will be responsible for scheduling and invoicing groups that book programs at the Science Barge and EcoHouse, and assisting in the running and maintenance of the Science Barge. The Sustainability Education Associate will report directly to the Sustainability Education Manager and assist with the following: conducting education programs at its experiential learning sites and at Yonkers Public Schools; training and supervising seasonal educators, interns, and youth employees/volunteers at the Science Barge; performing Barge and greenhouse site maintenance; and communicating with a diverse mix of public and non-profit partners.
The Sustainability Education Associate must be a versatile and energetic educator and farmer with at least two years of experience in an informal education position (i.e. museum, nature center, farm/garden). Educational or experiential knowledge of urban agriculture, renewable energy, climate change, and sustainable development is highly recommended. Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred. The ideal candidate is passionate about sustainability and conservation and able to communicate to a wide-range of audiences. They should be a team player but also be comfortable working independently and efficiently on tasks specifically assigned to this position as well as on projects for the organization as a whole. The Sustainability Education Associate must be able to think critically, write clearly, and find ways of applying available resources to accomplish goals. The right candidate will also be aligned with Groundwork’s “big picture” mission to affect and promote environmental, economic, and social wellbeing for the community.

Responsibilities include:
 Leading tours and STEM programs on the Science Barge alongside seasonal assistant educators. The Science Barge program content includes: hydroponic farming & sustainable food systems, renewable energy production & conservation, composting & waste management, climate science, climate change resilience, botany, food & nutrition, and water quality & river stewardship.
 Co-leading sustainability and resilience programs at the EcoHouse alongside the Sustainability Education Manager and/or seasonal assistant educators. The EcoHouse program content includes: energy efficient homes, energy and water conservation, carbon footprint reduction, climate safe neighborhoods, gardening, backyard habitats, apple cidering & homesteading, etc.
 Teaching in schools delivering sequential programs to our partner-schools in Yonkers and delivering occasional outreach programs as needed.
 Handling all aspects of managing reservations for group visits to the Science Barge and EcoHouse, including responding to inquiries by email or phone, scheduling, invoicing, and tracking payments.
 Working with the Sustainability Education Manager to train and supervise a team of exceptional seasonal educators and volunteers.
 Assisting with greenhouse and general barge management and maintenance, including seeding, transplanting, pruning, and harvesting crops, measuring and adjusting growing system nutrients, caring for aquaponics fish, monitoring and treating plant pests and disease (no pesticides are used), and regularly cleaning greenhouse and systems, as well as managing composting systems, the green roof, and renewable energy and heating systems.
 Helping to inventory and replenish educational and growing materials.
 Working with the Sustainability Education Manager to continually develop programs and evaluate their success.
 Coordinating with our Marketing/Development team on social media outreach, marketing campaigns, and fundraising.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate must be a self-starter, work well independently as well as accept supervision; share the values and vision of the organization; and demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of people from different backgrounds.
Qualifications include:
 At least two years of experience as an educator in an informal setting, such as a museum, nature center, or farm;
 Experience in facility maintenance, such as at a farm or in a greenhouse;
 A Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, environmental education, general education, or a related field;
 Demonstrated organizational skills along with strong oral and written communication skills;
 Basic computer skills: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Quickbooks and MS Publisher is a plus;
 A valid driver’s license;
 Spanish fluency highly desired;
 Local to South Yonkers a plus.

Compensation: Salary range is $32,000 - $35,000 commensurate with experience. Employee benefits include employer payment of 80% of health insurance, Simple IRA retirement plan and standard paid-time off benefits. This position reports to the Sustainability Education Manager and is an exempt full-time position which requires occasional evening and weekend hours.
