Position Title
Writer/farmer educator
Position Description
Cornell University: Farmer educator position in Drinkwater lab
We are seeking an energetic person with excellent writing and communication skills and extension experience to carry out a SARE professional development project. The ultimate goal of this project is to help farmers test their ideas, solve problems they encounter in their farming operations and develop innovative farming practices. The project will train extension educators in methods of inquiry used by farmers to conduct their own research while farming.
Responsibilities
• Compile information and collaboratively write a “how-to” resource manual, entitled Problem solving and innovation on the farm: A how-to manual
• Communicate with collaborating growers, interview innovative farmers to collect information for case studies
• Develop and write case studies of farmer experimentation and problem solving to be included in the manual
• Using the manual as a primary source, organize and conduct training workshops for extension educators
• During workshops, collect feedback on the manual and challenges/barriers extensionists foresee in delivering this information, and revise the manual accordingly
• Conduct follow-up surveys and phone calls to verify project outcomes
Requirements
• Must be responsible, personable, proactive, and able to multi-task and work with moderate supervision.
• Excellent verbal and written skills are essential. Must be able to communicate effectively with people in all agricultural sectors including research, extension and farming
• Must possess excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to carry out all steps involved in gathering information and writing detailed instructions for complex undertakings.
• Knowledge of farming practices used by organic and conventional farmers in the northeast
• Experience in developing and writing outreach materials that can be used by farmer educators and are accessible to farmers
• Must have a working knowledge of computer programs used in illustrating and formatting publications
• Knowledge/experience using website software beneficial but not required
• Minimum qualifications: a B.S. /B.A in soil or agricultural science with 2-4 years of experience in extension and outreach targeting farmers
