Greenhouse Production Head, Apprentice
Position Description
**Seeking a Greenhouse/High Tunnel Production Head as well as Farm Apprentices (hourly positions filled for 2018)** Root Down Farm is a 300+ member mixed vegetable CSA serving Greater Buffalo. We grow around 200 varieties of vegetables, melons, herbs and cut flowers in rotation on 10 acres. Our members come to the farm every week to pick up their share and use the upick fields. We offer spring, summer, and winter shares. Spring Shares start the first week of May and the Winter Share ends in mid-February. We also sell to wholesale restaurant and grocery accounts. We are a NOFA-NY Farmer's Pledge farm.

Skills Desired: The farm is looking for motivated, hardworking individuals who have a record of working well with others and who can maintain a good sense of humor. You must be reliable and able to work in all weather conditions. Attention to detail is important on a daily basis because we like to work as fast and efficiently as possible. You will be required to lift heavy objects and as a general guideline you should be able to lift 50 lbs or more on a regular basis. Employees should have a valid driver's license and a clean record. Previous farm experience is preferred, but is not mandatory.

Educational Opportunities: At the risk of sounding like my mother, I have to say that you get out what you put in. Educational components to this job are not always structured, but there is a ton to learn if you are willing. The Greenhouse/High Tunnel Production Head will gain a deeper knowledge of seed and field planning. All positions will be able to learn about greenhouse maintenance, transplanting, cultivating, harvesting, produce storage, and running a share on a weekly basis as well as the nuances involved in operating a small business. Attendance at the NOFA-NY winter conference in January and/or NOFA field days are also paid for by the farm. Apprentices may also swap work days with other neighboring farms. Apprentice educational meetings are also set aside monthly.

Stipend: Greenhouse/High Tunnel Production Head- $270/week (plus on farm room and board described in 'housing' section and shares from the farm) Apprentices- $260/week (plus on farm room and board described in 'housing' section and shares from the farm) Hourly Farm Crew- Filled for 2018 Worker's Comp covers all employees

Housing: Housing is included in the compensation for the Greenhouse/High Tunnel Production Head and the Apprentices. The farmhouse apartment is a fully furnished apartment that includes all utilities, WIFI, and laundry room. Each employee has their own bedroom in the apartment. We are also located close to the bike path, the town center and business district.

Internship Details: The farm is looking for people who love a hands-on working environment. Employees work full-time (up to 45 hours a week in peak season) with us and other seasonal farm crew members, for the entire season. Hours vary throughout the season. The work week will generally be 5 days. The work week is 5 1/2 days from July to mid-September when employees will be alternating half days on Saturdays. The Greenhouse and High Tunnel Production Head is in charge of the care and management of the greenhouse and high tunnels. They are in charge of carrying out the seed and tunnel plans as laid out by farm managers. The Greenhouse Head will also be expected to work along with the crew during regular field work and harvest.
