Position Description
Hawthorne Valley Farm is hiring a Vegetable Enterprise Manager to oversee our 14-acre vegetable operation. Hawthorne Valley is a non-profit organization committed to social renewal through agriculture, education and the arts. The farm is an integral part of the overall mission of Hawthorne Valley and helps create the wider context for many of the Hawthorne Valley initiatives.

The Vegetable Enterprise Manager is a vital part of the farm management team and will be expected to work collaboratively with the livestock managers to help cultivate the whole farm organism. This position reports to the Farm Operations Manager. S/he will be in charge of managing a crew of salaried employees, apprentices and hourly labor. Hawthorne Valley is a certified biodynamic® farm and therefore an openness to biodynamic practices is a must.


- 3 to 5 years of vegetable production and management experience
- Proficiency in equipment operation for tillage, cultivation, planting, etc.
- Proficiency in crop planning including succession planning, crop rotation and cover cropping.
- Experience and interest in working with apprentices
- Openness to/experience with biodynamic practices


Oversee all aspects of vegetable production for the following customers:

- Weekly farmers markets in NYC
- On site farm store
- Wholesale

The Vegetable Enterprise Manager will be responsible to:

- Develop and implement annual crop plan and planting schedules.
- Maintain crop records for certification.
- Order necessary seeds and supplies.
- Commitment to mentorship and skill-building with apprentices.
- Oversee winter growing and pea shoot enterprise.
- Work in collaboration with the vegetable crew, delegating roles and responsibilities as appropriate.
- Manage vegetable buy-in and fruit share schedule.
- Various administrative tasks – invoicing, CSA promotion and member relations, budget development, sales tracking, etc.
- Work in conjunction with farm management team to develop and adhere to the annual budget.
- Collaborate with educational programs to accommodate student volunteers.


Salary is based on experience and includes housing and benefits (medical/dental, retirement plan and vacation time)

Salary is based on 55 hours per week with lighter hours during the winter. A willingness to assist with livestock work as needed during the winter months is preferred.
