Vegetable Farmer
Position Description
Stonewood Farm in Millbrook, New York is looking for a farmer to manage our certified-organic vegetable operation. Experience should include the following:

• at least three years of small-scale organic vegetable and berry production;
• successful implementation of a vegetable production plan;
• record keeping and compliance to maintain an organic certification;
• budget planning;
• crop planning and rotation;
• compost, soil and organic pest and weed management;
• raising chickens for egg production;
• use and maintenance of all types of farm equipment and tools;
• greenhouses and drip irrigation systems; and
• working with chefs and selling to wholesale accounts and at weekly farmers markets.

Additional beneficial skills include:
• ability to mentor and manage interns, seasonal workers, and hourly staff;
• maintaining a social media presence for the Farm;
• computer proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel;
• flower production; and
• servicing all types of farm equipment.

The applicant must be hardworking, an organized manager of his/her time, and be able to efficiently balance the multiple demands of farm life. S/he must be articulate and a people-person who can build and foster relationships with coworkers, customers and the local community. S/he must be a team player, a self-starter, resourceful, detail-oriented, very neat, and respectful of the surroundings and living space. No pets (we have a farm dog) and tobacco/drug-free.

We employ a "market gardening" approach to farming, growing on a small scale (approximately 1 to 1.5 acres) using intensive methods. The applicant should have a small-scale farming approach and mindset. We rely primarily on small machinery (we have a BCS tiller) and simple hand tools for field cultivation. We also have a compact tractor with front loader and tiller.

The property is entirely deer fenced and includes soil suitable for farming, a 1/2 acre pond, irrigation from a designated well, fruit trees, and a 1/2 acre of raspberry and blueberry bushes. We have an equipment barn, a heated 26 by 48 foot high tunnel greenhouse, a walk-in cooler, a washing station, and a chicken house with fenced yard. We are currently completing construction of a 14 by 44 foot glass propagation greenhouse and an additional heated barn that will house a larger washing station and walk-in cooler/freezer, a root cellar, a bathroom, and an open space for farm activities and events. We sell at the Millbrook Farmers Market and to an upscale prepared food market, our local grocery store, and restaurants. With the exception of what we use ourselves, everything we grow is conveniently sold within a two-mile radius of the Farm.

Stonewood Farm’s mission is simple:

1. to use our land to support the next generation of farmers by providing access to farmland and offering learning opportunities with more experienced farmers.
2. to create a connection between our land and our local community by:
• growing healthy food of the highest quality;
• creating on-farm educational opportunities to raise awareness about food, food politics, nutrition and health;
• convening our community members around common interests related to food, agriculture and the environment; and
• creating partnerships with local schools and like-minded nonprofit organizations to help achieve our mission.
3. to feed those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

We strive to create a balance that fosters the Farm as a whole living organism, nurturing and feeding itself and, in return, feeding our growing family of customers. A vital part of this mission is our outreach to those who could not otherwise afford our high quality food. This is why we co-founded and make weekly donations to our local food pantry.

To further our mission, the vegetable operation is the core of a growing agri-tourism business at Stonewood Farm. We host on-farm educational activities, tours, events and dinners. As such, the Vegetable Farmer works with a team that includes a flower grower, farming intern(s), property maintenance staff, an arborist, chefs, event planners, and the owners. Because of the nature of our business, the Farm must be inviting, very well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing, as well as productive. Weed management is an essential requirement of the Vegetable Farmer position.

The Farm is located just outside the Village of Millbrook in New York’s pastoral Hudson Valley. The area is known as the bread basket serving New York City due to its abundance of farms, vineyards, and other culinary offerings. It is also known for its natural beauty and quiet, rural sophistication. Being less than a 90 minute drive to a wide range of destinations - everything from New York City to the Catskill, Berkshire and Adirondack mountain ranges - the lifestyle here is both civilized and bucolic.

This is a full time, year-round position. Compensation and benefits are competitive with an incentive plan, opportunity for growth, continuing education opportunities, a share of the vegetables grown, and use of our farm van.
