Urban Delights and The Southwest Community Learning Farm are
intensive, practical youth entrepreneurial projects in which at-risk
youth, aged 14-21, operate a collective of farm stands throughout the
inner city where they sell their locally-grown organic fresh fruits
and vegetables and an Urban Delights cookbook. Each provides youth
with an educational experience that includes entrepreneurship, youth
development, and leadership opportunities. The project is designed to
contribute to inner-city neighborhoods by enhancing connections to
local food systems, as well as by promoting urban agriculture, local
economic development, and the active participation of youth in their
communities.

Position Description

Learning Farm Manager

The Learning Farm Manager has overall responsibility for successful
operation of the Learning Farm. We are seeking a well –rounded
individual with strong farming skills, and is committed to community
based food systems to manage our one acre Learning Farm. A key
criteria for success is that participation in this project is
meaningful for all community members, youth, volunteers and staff.
Specific areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

Responsibilities

- Assistance with hiring, orientating, supervising,
recruiting, and evaluating staff, interns, and volunteers.

- Reporting necessary information directly to the Urban
Delights Manager, and will work directly with Urban Delights
Coordinator, Site Supervisors, and Urban Agriculture Educator
developing and facilitating a comprehensive orientation and training
program for participants

- Coordinating all aspects of the Learning Farm’s day to day
operations

- Development and implementation of the crop plan,
harvesting schedule, etc.

- Operation of the greenhouse

- Tracking of farm operations and data- harvest log,
germination rate, planting schedule, planting map, compost production,
etc.

- Assistance with planning special events; Annual Resource
Drive/Earth Day, Community Days, Workshops, etc.

- Nurturing the personal development of participants by
promoting positive youth development practices and serving as a
mentor.

- Assistance with supervising and training youth while at
the Learning Farm and undertaking ant necessary disciplinary action.

- Assistance with facilitating case management; develop ISS
strategies, develop /maintain participant files.

- Assistance with developing CSA with other local Urban Farms

- Organizing and maintaining Learning Farm materials and supplies

Experience and qualifications:

- Bachelor Degree in Sustainable Agriculture, Horticulture,
Geology and/or related field preferred, but not required.

- A minimum of 1-2 years’ experience working with community
gardens, horticulture, community engagement/outreach, and knowledge of
organic farming techniques fruit tee pruning and landscape maintenance

- Must be able to work with and develop relationships with
inner city youth, residents, and project partners. Must be familiar
with city neighborhoods and programs.

- Comfort working in an Urban Community, and speaking and
presenting in public about Urban Agriculture, and other relevant
topics.

- Vehicle and Valid NYS Driver’s License is required to
complete job responsibilities

Rate of Pay

$16-$19 per hour depending on experience

(Subject to change based on available funding)

Hours

21.75 hours per week (3 days) for 16 weeks, and 36.25 hours per week
(5 days) for 22 weeks. (Subject to increase based on available
funding)
